Throwing back to 2007, and the quintessential early 20's Euro backpacking experience.
Corfu was one of my favourite Greek Islands. It is so full of olive trees, that the streets apparently glisten when they're in season. With the lush greenery and warm water, it was like a vacation away from our backpacking adventure.
Getting there was tough, but we did it. We took a ferry from Bari, Italy, and eventually made it to the island after camping on the deck of a cruise ship for a night.
We stayed in a hostel called the Pink Palace (http://thepinkpalace.com/). It's been a long time since we've stayed there, but the reviews are still good. It was a place to get up to no good (not in a bad way) for early-twenty-year-olds. It was fantastic. We went sea kayaking, did yoga, read on the beach, played in the waves, checked out the city, and ate pretty well for penny-pinching backpackers. We lived off of gyros, topped off with fries, sampled a lot of ouzo, and olive-oil drenched dishes. I also had many dishes broken over my head, in the Greek tradition (Opa!).
I'm so happy I have these memories to sooth my current Toronto-bound self :) Happy to say that my next adventure should be coming soon.
And, whenever I'm having a bad day, I always remember what the locals on the beach would say to me: "If I have one thing to do, I do it; if I have two things to do, I do them; If I have three things to do, I say screw it all and go to the beach, and start from the beginning the next day".
